Recently I transitioned from a very satisfying 18 year career in IT into a full time coaching. I retrained as a Personal Performance Coach a few years ago and knew without a doubt that this was the path I was meant to be on. I procrastinated for a while on a full transition because my career in technology was also important to me and what would people think of me throwing away my lucrative IT job to change careers.

We tend to use the phrase “what if” when we start dreaming big and then fear sets in

“What if I fail? What if I can’t do it? What if people judge me?”

These thoughts and words that we project in our mind and then out into the world keep us playing small, keep us in our comfort zones; and keep us from living the life we are truly meant to live.

If you have a desire in your heart then it is meant for you. I finally figured out that I don’t have to leave my technology career behind; instead I have combined all of my skills together; business relationship management, coaching, teaching, training, facilitating and mentoring; and using them to create a life on my terms, doing exactly what I love, developing people and helping them to realise their goals and dreams.

Here’s what I have learnt on my journey

  • Know where you are heading and then break it down and take small step to get there.
  • Be consistent, don’t just try something once and think it will work. Sometimes we have to try different things to get a different result
  • What got you to where you are is not going to get you to where you want to me. Keep learning and seeking out growth opportunities. Continue    to be curious
  • Ask for help, especially from those who have got to where you want to be. Success leaves clues so make the most of the knowledge that has come before you
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Achieving higher levels of success means doing things you have never done before. Do them, there is great reward on the other side.
  • Be okay with where you are, it’s not so much about the destination as it is about the journey and the person you are becoming
  • Do things that are fun and if you have to do them and they aren’t fun, how can you make them fun
  • There is no such thing as failure, just different experiences teaching you something about yourself and the world
