A few weeks ago I wrote to you about “How to make a No Lose Decision”

Today I want to delve into this a bit deeper as we all have difficulty in this area at one point or another. I am going to break down decision making because there is a lot more to it than you think.

Some of us fear decision making because we don’t trust ourselves or have no way to gauge that we are making the right decision.

Or, we fear that by making a decision we will be missing out on something else.

So we go around and around stuck in analysis paralysis weighing up the pros and cons a thousand times. Finally making a decision only to back track again.

We do this with both small and big decisions. Think about the last time you went to a restaurant, did you go through the whole menu and then check in with whoever you were with to see what they were having only to go aback and have another look? (I’ve done this so many times)

So how can we make ourselves make fast decisions on the small, less risky things so we can build our decision making muscle for making the big decisions?

Well there are actually 3 parts to this process:

  1. Actually DECIDING what to do
  2. COMMITTING to the decision
  3. Taking ACTION on it

Can you identify where you run into trouble in this 3-step process?

  • Do you easily make a decision but then aren’t very good at committing to it. You start taking action but are easily swayed into another decision because you haven’t committed fully to your original one?

  • Do you struggle to decide and therefore commit to nothing and take no action?

The first step is to have an awareness of your pattern around decision making – Is it the commitment, the decision making or the action that you struggle with

Every situation might be different and you can use this handy technique to understand what is going on for you and tackle it appropriately

Tips for each

Actually deciding

  • Take some time to look at the options. Do you have enough information to make the decision? If NO, then ask yourself what information, help or resources you need to make the decision. If YES, then make the decision. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will take action straight away but you have decided what to do.
  • Ask yourself who else has had to make a similar decision and see how and what they did
  • Remind yourself that there is no wrong decision, each one has learnings and growth along the way. This will lessen the impact and make it easier to decide

Committing

  • Often our commitment decreases with time and the best way to avoid this is to take 5 minutes every morning to focus on your WHY. What made you decide to do this in the first place. What is important to you about it
  • Recommit to your decision everyday by writing it down and reading your WHY.

Taking action

  • Break down what you need to do into bite size goals to avoid overwhelm
  • Start, do something to move the needle, even if it the smallest action. The faster you start taking action the easier it becomes to take more
  • Ask yourself what is the next smallest action you could take to move you forward

Look at decision making as a muscle, to strengthen a muscle we need to exercise it over and over again; in doing so it grows bigger and stronger. By repeating our actions over and over again our brains begin to create new connections through a process known as neuroplasticity, and in doing so, our comfort zone begins to expand.
